Celebrating Saint Patrick's Day is really celebrating the feast day of Saint Patrick, the holy man who brought so much to Ireland. According to legends Saint Patrick banished snakes from Ireland after a forty day fast. He used the shamrock to illustrate the Holy Trinity, showing that the three parts make one whole. He also thrust his mighty walking stick into the ground and it grew into a living tree. Saint Patrick was a holy man of God, spreading the word of Catholicism across the green land of Ireland. So we celebrate him in the most appropriate way possible: drinking and debauchery. Instead of fasting and prayer, we pray to the Irish god of Jameson, Guinness, Bailey's, and Bushmills. Who has time for fasting when there are heaping portions of corned beef and cabbage to be consumed to celebrate fine Irish culture. We do not go to church because we are busy at the holy houses of John Barleycorn, the Blarney Stone, Mullen's, Irish Oak, and River Shannon. The hymns we sing are those written by U2 and the Cranberries. Okay, so maybe we are not the most pious people on this feast day, but we do not have to be. Patrick was the saint, not us.
